CASSOPOLIS -- Cass County commissioners adopted a resolution at last Thursday's Board meeting recognizing Mary McFarland for her many years of volunteering and dedication to citizens.
McFarland, who received a standing ovation, was recently named "Volunteer of the Year" for the Michiana Volunteers 55 Plus awards program.
She is a founding member of Helping Hands and has served as a volunteer for 17 years and as the coordinator for three years.
She has helped fire victims, migrant workers, low-income families and acted as a court advocate for the elderly.
According to Resolution 81 of 2004 introduced June 3 by Commissioner Dixie Ann File, R-Cassopolis, McFarland also worked with the community to open a youth club that provides after-school activities, homework assistance and a computer lab.
