NILES -- Brandywine High School senior Nicki McGowen and junior Kory Bridges are the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for May 31-June 5.
McGowen is a member of the Brandywine varsity softball team which won the Division 3 District Tournament at Buchanan last week. McGowen tossed a pair of one-hitters in the Bobcats' two victories. She also struck out 21 batters in the process. In a 10-0 win over Buchanan in the semifinals, McGowen hit a triple. In a 12-0 win over River Valley in the title game, she hit a double.
Bridges is a member of the Brandywine varsity baseball team which won the Division 3 District Tournament Saturday at Buchanan. In the championship game, Bridges held River Valley to three hits and struck out eight batters. In the Bobcats' two victories, Bridges went 4-for-7 at the plate with six RBIs.
Both Brandywine teams will take part in Saturday's Regional Tournament at Hartford. The softball team will face Hartford at 10 a.m. The baseball team will take on Gobles at 12:30 p.m. The softball final is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the baseball final is set for 3 p.m.
