NILES -- Niles Township Building Official and Zoning Administrator Van Thornton has resigned his job.
The date of his last day at work has yet to be set. Thornton said he is working with township officials to provide a transition until his successor is hired.
Thornton said he handed in his resignation a couple of weeks ago, but said he didn't want to discuss reasons for his decision.
The township board did not act on Thornton's resignation at its last meeting, said Township Clerk Marge Durm-Hiatt. However, she said this morning Thornton will be missed.
Thornton, who for many years owned and operated a business in Niles, said he isn't certain what he'll do next professionally.
Durm-Hiatt said, even though the township board has yet to accept Thornton's resignation, the township has already received three applications for Thornton's position. She said advertisements seeking candidates for the building official position would begin soon.
The township contracts for plumbing and electrical inspections. The building official is in charge of structural building inspections and administering the township's zoning ordinances, Durm-Hiatt said.
