Cass County's Relay for Life theme this year is "Racing for a Cure," and they are off to a great start.
Thanks to community sponsorship, they have received more than $21,000 so far. The Relay's goal this year is to raise $112,000.
With 38 teams participating in addition to the community sponsorships, the Relay committee is confident that this year's relay will be successful in reaching its goals.
The Relay will be held at the Cass County Fairgrounds in Cassopolis this Saturday, May 22. Opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. with guest speaker Linda Herter, owner of Pink Lady Bug Designs, a graduate of Cassopolis High School and cancer survivor.
Also speaking is Kathy Hoekstra, co-owner of Pacific Quest Day Spa of Dowagiac and a caregiver, and Marica Liepman, M.D., with West Michigan Cancer Center.
There will be an antique tractor and car show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, sponsored by the Cass County Council on Aging.
Anyone is welcome to participate with a $5 donation.
There will be many other events and activities throughout the day, including a rock climbing wall, a live auction, a Gong Show, a Mr. Relay pageant and much more.
There will be food and drinks available throughout the day as well. A highlight of the Relay is the luminary ceremony, which begins at 10 p.m. The luminaries will be lit and placed around the track. The ceremony will have music by the Dowagiac Union High School Choir and by Joanna Martino from Edwardsburg High School. Dr. Ted Hinchcliff with Notre Dame Research Department will be a guest speaker.
Relay has 24 straight hours of music provided by "The Beat Goes On" DJ, Bill Craft.
Relay for Life is a fun-filled event with 24 hours of entertainment for the whole family.
What better way to raise money for cancer awareness, education and prevention? Everyone is invited to join in on the fun, laughs and tears as they honor all cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost in battle.
