The Niles varsity soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback at Battle Creek Harper Creek Wednesday night.
Playing shorthanded because of a conflict with the high school band, the Vikings had to adjust to missing key players Amy Anton, Sarah Barth and Nicole Fink.
Sophomore Danie Pulaski scored early in the game, but had the goal called off because of a pushing penalty away from the ball.
Harper Creek then was awarded a penalty kick and scored to take a 1-0 lead. The Beavers then took a 2-0 lead with about two minutes left in the first half.
In the second half Harper Creek extended its lead to 3-0 before Niles' Lacey Wiemuth scored off an assist from Claire Isabell to cut the lead to 3-1.
Niles was unable to score another goal despite outshooting the Beavers.
