Ashley Austin may only be a sophomore but her high school track and field career at Niles High School is already a success.
Austin broke the Niles record in the shot put Friday night while participating in the Kalamazoo Central Invitational. Austin's toss of 34-8 broke the old school record, which she tied earlier in the week, of 33-8.
Austin and partner Kyla Kirkendoll finished third in the shot put relay Friday night.
The Niles discus relay team of Ashley Spriggs and Chelsea Bennett finished second overall with a total distance of 195-5. Bennett, a sophomore, threw a personal best of 103 feet while Spriggs also set a career best with a throw of 92-5.
The Niles 3,200-meter relay team of Kristin Lamarre, Tammy Madison, Lindsey Leech and Heather Rogers finished fifth overall.
The Niles 800-meter relay team of Amanda Britton, Lamarre, Shameka Fultz and Tasha Webster also took fifth place.
