No fun at Northern

The No. 2-ranked Brandywine varsity softball team suffered a pair of losses to go with just one win Saturday at the Portage Northern Invitational.
The Bobcats (11-4) opened the day with a 4-0 loss to the host Huskies. Brandywine then lost 2-1 to Grandville before beating Kalamazoo Christian 3-0 to end the day.
In the first game the Huskies scored four runs on four hits and neither team committed an error. Brandywine also managed four hits but was unable to score.
Nicki McGowen (11-4) took the loss and Mary Gierke earned the victory for Portage Northern.
Dee Echevarria led the Bobcats at the plate with two singles.
Brandywine committed three errors in the loss to Grandville. Despite tossing a no-hitter and striking out 12 batters, McGowen suffered the loss. Tammi Filkins earned the victory for Grandville.
The Bobcats managed five hits against Grandville, led by a triple from Amber Valentine.
McGowen struck out 13 batters and allowed two hits in the victory over Kalamazoo Christian. Both teams committed one error.
Allison Frillinger took the loss for the Comets as Brandywine sent six hits back at her.
Amanda Grice paced the Bobcats with a triple and a double.
Brandywine returns to action Tuesday afternoon as it hosts Buchanan in a Lakeland Conference doubleheader at 4 p.m.
