Crash kills one in Calvin

CASSOPOLIS -- A fatal accident Friday evening, April 9, on Ironwood Drive, south of Redfield Street in Milton Township, killed a Niles man, Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reported.
The driver of the vehicle, Henry Dube, 54, of Niles, was traveling north on Ironwood at 6:52 p.m. when, according to witnesses, he suddenly veered left, crossing the centerline and striking a tree.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.
His seatbelt was worn at the time of the accident.
Michigan State Police Post 53, Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service (SMCAS) of Niles, Niles Township Fire Department and Clay Township, Ind., Rescue assisted sheriff's deputies at the scene.
The sheriff said alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
The crash remained under investigation.
A young Cassopolis man was hurt Saturday morning when the vehicle he was driving south on Calvin Center Road failed to stop at its intersection with U.S. 12
Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reported that, according to witnesses, the vehicle driven by Matthew Rice, 19, of Cassopolis, continued straight through the intersection and struck a tree.
Rice was transported to Elkhart, Ind., General Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Porter Township Fire and Ambulance and Oslo, Ind., Ambulance assisted deputies at the scene of the 10:50 a.m. crash on April 10.
Seatbelts were worn at the time of the accident.
Alcohol does appear to be a factor, the sheriff reported.
The accident remains under investigation.
