NILES -- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public hearing today at 7 p.m. at Niles High School auditorium to gather public input a request for a air permit from Indeck Energy, which plans to build a gas-powered electricity generating plant here.
The state agency previously issued an air permit for the facility, proposed for the Niles Industrial Park. However, because construction didn't begin within the 18-month period after its issue, the permit has expired.
Indeck has filed an application for a new air permit and tonight' hearing is part of that process.
Indeck has purchased land in the city's industrial park and proposed to construction a $600 million, 1,076 megawatt, natural gas-fired electricity generating plant here. However, apparently an economic downtown has thus far prevented Indeck from constructing its facility here.
