Local football teams honored by state’s coaches

NILES -- The Michigan High School Football Coaches Association recently honored several local football players and coaches.
In the most recent issue of the Association's newsletter, the annual postseason awards were listed.
The Niles High School football program took home several awards, including its fourth straight Academic All-State team award. The Vikings' top 11 players had a combined grade point average of 3.926, the second best among all of the Division 3 teams in the state.
Niles varsity coach Dave Janicki was one of only five coaches in the state to be honored with the Steve Spicer Leadership Award.
Niles junior varsity coach Steve Grayson took home one of the association's Assistant Coach of the Year awards for his work with the Niles junior varsity.
Two local student-athletes also earned recognition from the Coaches Association.
Niles High School senior Rob Schuelke earned Academic All-State Honorable Mention status while Brandywine High School senior Nick Shelton earned Academic All-State Special Mention status.
