Player registration for the 2004 season of the Optimist Soccer League is in progress.
Registration forms have been distributed to all Niles and Buchanan area schools and are available at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA.
Players must currently be in regular kindergarten (not pre-kindergarten or begindergarten) through eighth grade.
Because of the availability of varsity and junior varsity soccer for men and women at area high schools, the participation in recreational soccer has fallen off in recent years.
Since it has become difficult to form enough teams for the high school level, the Optimist Soccer League has this year discontinued the high school division.
Players who are now in grades nine through 12 are encouraged to participate as referees and coaches.
Registration sessions are being held Saturday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 24, in two locations.
Players on Buchanan teams may register at the Buchanan Middle School from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on either day, and players on Niles teams may register at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA from 9 a.m. until noon on the same two dates.
Registration fees are $30 per player or $50 for a family of two or more players in the same household.
Mail-in registrations are encouraged.
Registration forms are also being accepted at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA.
The deadline for all player registrations is Jan. 29.
