Junior varsity falls to Marshall; eighth grade tops New Buffalo

The Dowagiac junior varsity basketball team dropped a 51-32 decision to host Marshall on Friday night.
Dowagiac led 14-13 after one period of play, but trailed 19-17 at the intermission and 29-23 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Jason Manley led Dowagiac with 10 points, while David Stuppy and Kenny Franz each scored seven points.
Brian Edgerly finished with six points.
Dowagiac, now 1-7 on the season, will host Niles on Friday night beginning at approximately 5:45.
No freshman results were available at press time.
Jr. High hoops
The Central Middle School eighth grade basketball team defeated New Buffalo, 43-22 Thursday afternoon.
Jamie Simpson led Dowagiac with 15 points, while Glen Haggin added eight points and Ronnell Grady five points.
Michael Castillo added four points.
All 10 players scored for the Chieftains.
JV volleyball
The Dowagiac junior varsity volleyball team finished third in the Edwardsburg Invitational on Saturday.
The Chieftains were third in pool play after losing to Edwardsburg and Niles, defeating Buchanan and Cassopolis, and split with Brandywine.
Dowagiac then played No. 1 Edwardsburg in the championship round of the tournament, while Niles played Brandywine.
Edwardsburg defeated the Chieftains, 6-15 and 4-15.
Jackie Sayre led Dowagiac with eight aces, while Ashley Willis finished with five aces.
Lisa Rubino had seven assists to pace Dowagiac, which also got 17 kills and seven blocks from Jill Billingham.
Ann O'Keefe finished with 11 kills.
Dowagiac is now 9-9-1 heading into next Saturday's New Buffalo Invitational.
Freshman
Volleyball
The Dowagiac freshman vollayball team finished second in the Edwardsburg Invitatioal on Saturday.
Dowagiac competed against Cass, Buchanan, Brandywine, River Valley and Edwardsburg.
No statistics were available at press time.
Dowagiac's varsity volleyball team will return to action on Saturday as it too will compete in the New Buffalo Invitational tournament. Pool play begins at 8:30 a.m.
