NILES -- If you are one of the many who has chosen to lose weight as a New Year's resolution and would like some help, the Niles-Buchanan Senior Center offers a program that can get you started on the right foot.
On Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., the center is holding a weight loss support group based on Dr. Phil's seven steps to healthy living. It is free and open to all members of the public, regardless of age.
Pat Miles, who is also on the board of directors, leads the group by directing discussions and providing inspiration.
Miles said she was inspired to be involved with the program because of her overweight husband, who is currently in the hospital.
The group will base their practices on the popular book "The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom," by Dr. Phil McGraw.
Miles said they will be working from the book, but it is not required for participants to own it.
Klute said the center will work on purchasing some copies of the book so group members can look it over.
Miles, who has lost eight pounds since preparing for the program last week, said she is no expert on Dr. Phil's practices and they will all be learning together.
In future weeks, the support group will feature guest speakers.
They already have a nutritionist scheduled and mentioned the possibilities of a therapist and an exercise expert.
Miles stressed the importance of changing attitudes and eating habits.
She also said it was important to get a support system by pairing up with a friend or someone else in the group.
Klute pointed out the other opportunities offered by the center to assist in weight loss, including exercise classes, tai-chi and line dancing.
The center offers a variety of free programs that are open to all members of the public.
