NILES -- The new Niles fire station is starting to take shape, but a few minor setbacks delayed construction by a month or two.
However, Niles City Fire Chief Larry Lamb said the project is back on schedule now.
The project's completion had a small delay due to masonry problems and weather constraints.
Construction of the fire station began last spring and they are looking for it to be completed in mid to late February.
On Monday afternoon, construction crews were installing garage doors in the double deep bay area.
The state of the art facility also features a council chamber, numerous offices, an instructional training room, multiple bathrooms, a laundry room, a bunk room, a physical training room, a recreational room, a kitchen and storage space.
Lamb said the physical training room which will feature cardiovascular equipment is larger than the recreational room.
Lamb said it was amazing to see it come along.
One feature they had in mind when designing the station was quick access to the bay.
The layout was mapped out so the mostly highly trafficked areas were closest to the bay.
They will also be installing all of the doors so the swing open toward the bay, which is located in the center of the new facility.
Lamb pointed out that the project was a culmination of efforts from the city council, the former fire chief, the firemen and the architects.
