WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, has announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $390,282 in additional funds to 10 local public housing commissions in its second round of capital fund grands.
Niles, received an additional $44,412 for December after receiving $210,277 in August.
Dowagiac received an additional $20,401 for December after receiving $96,592 in August.
In August, Upton announced $1,930,760 in the first round of grants to the same southwest Michigan public housing commissions.
The grant funding is designated for the modernization and development of public housing and for the improvement of housing management.
Each year HUD distributes millions of dollars nationwide to public housing agencies through its capital fund program (CFP). The amount of federal dollars provided to local housing authorities through the CFP is based upon formula and the amounts distributed vary from year to year.
HUD grants have also been received by: Bangor, $11,609 in December and $54,963 in August; Benton Harbor, $117,204 and $588,088; Benton Township, $101,149 and $507,531; Covert, $9,602 and $45,464; Paw Paw, $16,508 and $82,832; St. Joseph, $21,810 and $109,434; South Haven, $33,091 and $166,043; and Sturgis, $14,496 and $68,636.
