Loyola nips CMU

A 14-0 run midway through the second half powered Loyola (Chicago) to a 90-83 non-league men's basketball win over Central Michigan University Tuesday.
The loss dropped the Chippewas to 2-7 for the season while the Ramblers are now 3-4.
CMU dominated much of the first half, holding a 40-28 lead with 3:13 to go. However, Loyola went on a 13-4 run to cut the halftime deficit to 44-41.
The Ramblers took their first lead since early in the game at 54-53 with 14:10 remaining. The 14-0 spurt led to a 63-53 advantage with 11:41 remaining.
CMU battled back to cop an 83-82 lead with 1:39 to play on a 3-pointer by David Hoskins but would not score again.
Kevin Nelson scored a career-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers, while Tony Bowne added a career-high 19 points, five rebounds and six assists. Niles High School graduate Gerrit Brigitha scored 14 points, all in the first half, and frosh Sefton Barrett saw his most extended action of the season and responded with career highs of seven points and 10 rebounds.
CMU shot 48 percent from the 3-point arc on 12-of-25 and finished at 50.8 percent from the field on 31-of-61. Loyola meshed 47 percent of its shots on 35-of-73.
Game-high scoring honors went to Blake Schilb with 24 points.
The key stat in the game was Loyola's 45-32 edge in rebounding. Schilb had nine.
The Chippewas are idle until a Dec. 30 home battle with Tri-State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
