NILES -- A Niles man who had allegedly assaulted his girlfriend barracaded himself in his home on Sunday night and held police at bay until surrendering shortly before 2:30 a.m.
Niles Township Police investigated a 9-1-1 hang up call that was received by its dispatch center at about 8:27 p.m. Sunday.
When dispatchers tried to call back to the home from which the call originated, they were unable to make contact.
Police discovered Kenneth Thompson, 44, of 205 Knott Road, Niles, had allegedly assaulted and threatened to kill his girlfriend and pulled the telephone line out of the wall when she attempted to call for help.
The girlfriend was able to escape the home. However, Thompson was holed up inside. Police officers were told Thompson had weapons inside the home.
Niles Township Police were assisted by the City of Niles Police Department's SWAT team, as well as troopers from Michigan State Police Post 53.
Police were able to control the situation and take Thompson into custody without injuries.
Thompson is expected to be arraigned today on charges of assault with intent to murder and interference with someone trying to make a call to police for help.
