Local teams land in lower bracket

The Lakeshore Varsity Volleyball Invitational was not a friendly place for the Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan teams Saturday.
All three squads struggled in pool play and landed in the lower bracket of tournament play.
Hanover-Horton won the tournament, beating St. Joseph 25-19, 25-19 in the championship match. The Bears beat Hanover-Horton in their first pool play match of the day.
Brandywine split with Hanover-Horton during pool play but did not get a chance to play for the title.
The tournament, which included 16 teams, used rally scoring throughout the day, playing two games to 15 during pool play. The finals also used rally scoring but games were played to 25.
Niles returns to action Saturday at the Dowagiac Invitational. That tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. Niles opens Big-16 West Division action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at home against Lakeshore.
The next action for Brandywine will be Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Bridgman for a Lakeland Conference match.
Buchanan travels to Niles on Monday, Jan. 5, for a non-conference dual match before going to River Valley on Wednesday, Jan. 7, for its next league contest.
