Dayton denies Chippewas in Maui Invitational

A 15-0 Dayton run over a seven and a half minute stretch early in the first half gave Dayton a big enough cushion for an 82-63 win over Central Michigan University in the first round of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational on Monday.
The Chippewas trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half but made a quick comeback in the second frame to cut the lead down to six with 10 minutes left to play.
CMU used a 3-point barrage to get back into it, hitting 10 triples in the game, including seven in the second half.
Sophomore Kevin Nelson led the Chippewas in his first career start, pouring in a career-high 17 points while hitting five three-pointers. Junior transfer Robert Sevalia added 10 points off the bench, including two 3-pointers, and starting forward Brandon Voorhees tallied career-highs of eight points and a team-high eight rebounds before fouling out with just over six minutes left in the game.
All five Dayton starters scored in double figures with Keith Waleskowski posting a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds.
The Flyers shot 50 percent from the floor in the game and made 20-of-25 free throw attempts. CMU made only eight trips to the charity stripe, hitting seven of the freebies. The Chippewas had as many 3-point field goals in the second half as they did 2-pointers.
CMU now plays at 2 p.m. EST Today in the second round against Ohio State. The Buckeyes lost to San Diego State on Monday.
In other action at the Maui Invitational Monday, host Chaminade upset Villanova and Hawaii beat Santa Clara.
