Niles man charged in fatal crash

NILES -- Criminal charges have been authorized against a Niles man for the Sept. 6 death of Melissa Ann Schrader.
Delbert B. Jennings, 28, 3237 Redfield, Niles, has been charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal injury accident, said a press release issued by the office of prosecuting attorney, Victor A. Fitz.
Schrader was killed when Jennings struck her with his pickup truck on Kline Road and Redfield Street.
Schrader allegedly failed to immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident and remain at the scene until police arrived.
The felony has a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment and/or $7,500 fine.
In other police reports:
John H Berry, 56, 1616 Indiana Ave., South Bend, Ind., was arrested after a police officer patrolling on Pokagon Street allegedly saw Berry turn onto North Fifth Street without stopping for the stopping sign, the police report said.
The officer caught up with Berry and made contact with him on Eight and Ash streets.
While talking to Berry, the officer could allegedly smell a strong odor of intoxicating liquor coming from Berry's breath.
Not passing sobriety tests, Berry was arrested and transported to the Niles City Police Department where he was booked and lodged. Bond was set at $200.
