A new parents support group for girls basketball, grades 7-12, has formed and will be holding a meeting on Wednesday in order to discuss up-coming fund-raising activities and a possible mission statement.
The group, which already held a fund-raiser at Steinman's Shell back in October, will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Union High School cafeteria.
The parents of basketball players grades 7-12 are welcome to attend the meeting.
The group's president is Judy Johnson and it's secretary is Carol Ostyn.
This group is in no way affiliated with the Dowagiac Athletic Boosters, although in some ways they are functioning in the same manner.
The Dowagiac Girls Hoop Group is going to raise money for the girl's basketball program to purchase items above what would come out of Dowagiac Union High School's athletic budget and anything that the Dowagiac Booster Club might purchase for the basketball program.
Union High School officials are in the process of putting together a policy to address these support groups, however, no formal policy has been approved according to Dowagiac athletic director Bob Follett.
While the Dowagiac Girls Hoop Group is the first official parents support group, other sports have been holding seperate fund-raisers for years, such as the Dowagiac softball program.
The soccer parents run a concession stand during games to raise monies for their programs as well.
Dowagiac football coach Mike Stanger acknowledged last week that he is interested in putting together such a support group as well.
