Police make driving, assault arrests

NILES -- A man was arrested in Niles on Wednesday pending charges of alleged assault and battery.
Richard Corey Hayden, 43, 201 Market St., Niles, was arrested at his home after police had interviewed the victims of the alleged assault, the police report said.
Hayden, who came walking from his garage before police apprehended him, was transported to the Niles City Police Department where he was booked and lodged with no bond.
In other police reports:
Brandon Patrick Carter, 20, 1206 Oak St., Niles, was arrested after a police officer observed Carter allegedly going 50 in a 30 mph zone on South 11th Street and going though a red light without stopping at Oak Street.
Upon making contact, the officer could allegedly smell strong odor of intoxicating liquor from Carter's breath.
Carter was arrested and transported to the Niles City Police Department where he was issued a citation for no valid operators license and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Carter was lodged with a $200 bond.
Cory Rand Simmons, 19, 576554 Indian Lake Rd., Dowagiac, was arrested after a police officer observed a vehicle sitting in the rear parking lot near the Billiard Garden Pool located on South 11th Street.
The police officer checked the parked vehicle after having received tips people were using the parking lot as a place to smoke marijuana.
The officer made contact and could allegedly smell the odor of burning marijuana when the people in the vehicle opened the window.
Asked to step out of the vehicle, Simmons displayed the marijuana on the officer's request.
Simmons was arrested and transported to the Niles City Police Department where he was booked and released after paying a $100 bond.
Two other passengers were issued citations for unlawful use of marijuana.
