CASSOPOLIS -- Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that deputies from his department, in conjunction with the Dowagiac Police Department and the Ontwa Township Police Department, apprehended two subjects for committing an armed robbery of the Drakes Little Super convenience store in Wayne Township.
The robbery, at 1:54 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, occurred after one of the suspects, a white female, came into the store, demanded money and said she had a weapon. The suspect then obtained an undisclosed amount of cash from the store, got into a waiting vehicle and left the area.
Upon receiving the 911 call from the store clerk, a dispatch was put out to all units in the county, giving the description of the vehicle and suspect.
A short time later, Central Dispatch received a call from a business owner who heard the dispatch over her police scanner, advising that a vehicle matching that description was seen at the Five-Mile Marathon gas station at the intersection of M-51 and M-152.
An employee of the Cass County Road Commission who was near that intersection also heard the dispatch, located the vehicle and followed it, radioing in to Central Dispatch as the vehicle began to travel south on M-51 towards the City of Dowagiac.
The vehicle was stopped a short time later without incident by patrol units from the Ontwa Township Police Department, Cass County Sheriff's Office and Dowagiac Police Department.
The two female occupants were arrested when evidence was discovered linking the subjects to the crime. The suspects were transported to the Cass County Jail in Cassopolis to await arraignment in Fourth District Court for robbery. Their names will be released after that time.
The clerk was not injured in the incident, which remains under investigation by sheriff's detectives.
