NILES -- Niles Community Schools has done its best to maintain the quality of its educational programs despite having to cut $1 million from last year's budget, school officials said.
But with further cuts in education being a possibility due to Michigan's $898 million budget deficit, Doug Law, the school district's superintendent, isn't sure what will happen with the school district's educational programs in the future.
Nor does he rule out that the school district may be looking at staff layoffs to maintain a balanced budget.
Having attended a Berrien County Intermediate School District meeting Monday morning with area educators, Law said the school district could be hit with a $500,000 to a $1 million cut in state funding.
But Niles Community Schools isn't the only school district to face possible budget cuts, he said.
Law, however, said it's better to learn about possible budget cuts early in the year.
Last school year, he said, school district's weren't made aware of the cuts until March.
At the regular school board meeting on Monday, Law also said enrollment is above projections by 12 students.
The current total of students attending Niles Community Schools is 3995, which is five under compared to last year.
