Bowser joins Howard Elementary School staff

Niles Community Schools is welcoming 32 new teachers and counselors to the district this year. This continues a series of profiles introducing new teachers to the Niles community.
SUE BOWSER
How many years of teaching experience do you have?
Fifteen years total- six years in Ohio teaching middle school reading and nine years substitute teaching in Niles and Buchanan.
Where do you come from and where have you taught in the past?
I graduated from Buchanan, so I grew up in this area. I have taught in Lewisburg, Ohio for six years. I taught high school spanish for one semester in Buchanan. For the past eight-and-a-half years I've substituted in the Niles District – five-and-a-half years in the elementary schools and three years at Ring Lardner.
Where did you get your teachers education?
I graduated from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio in 1983.
What will you teach at Niles Community Schools?
I will be teaching fifth grade at Howard Elementary School.
Why did you choose to teach in this school district?
My children go to Niles Schools and I have worked in the district for a long time.
Do you have family in the area?
Yes, I live with my husband and two teenage daughters. My parents live in Niles and my brother and his family live in Buchanan. My niece and her husband also live in Niles.
What are you looking forward to as a new teacher in this school district?
Continuing to build friendships with my co-workers, my students and their families.
What did you know about this area before you came here?
Since I grew up in this area, it's very familiar to me. I'm glad that my husbands work transferred us back to the area.
What do you know about the school district?
It's a great district to work for. There are many wonderful people that I've had the privilege to work with in the past. I'm looking forward to continuing these relationships and forming new ones.
How did you become interested in teaching?
I have always enjoyed working with young people. Teaching provides both challenges and awards every day.
What is your family background?
I have been married for 18 years. My husband works at Whirlpool. We have two teenage daughters in the Niles School District. One is a sophomore and the other is a junior.
What are some of your hobbies?
I enjoy sewing, cooking and doing all sorts of crafts. When our family has time, we enjoy travelling and boating.
