NILES -- After an evenly-played first quarter, the Brandywine varsity basketball team distanced itself from visiting Berrien Springs on its way to an easy 54-29 Lakeland Conference victory Thursday night.
The Bobcats outscored the Shamrocks 40-18 following the first quarter, improving to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in league play.
The difference was Brandywine's attack of the Berrien Springs zone defense. In the second quarter the Bobcats got 11 of their 16 points from post players.
Junior post players Katie Tuohy and Emily Whitney each had 10 points in the game as did senior forward Emily Christiansen. Tuohy registered a double-double with 11 rebounds as well.
Trailing 41-22 at the end of the third quarter, the Shamrocks went on a 7-2 run to start the fourth period. Roeder called a timeout with 5:53 left in the game and made the necessary adjustment.
The Bobcats proceeded to outscore Berrien 11-0 the rest of the way.
Brandywine's junior varsity team beat Berrien Springs 40-24. Kelli Zache led the Bobcats with 11 points.
Brandywine returns to action Tuesday at Edwardsburg.
