NILES -- Niles Township Firefighter Bruce Vosburgh was removed from his job last week by the Niles Township Board of Trustees.
Vosburgh had been a township firefighter for 22 years. He is the son of Ralph Vosburgh, who was a founder of the Niles Township Fire Department 50 years ago.
Township Clerk Marge Durm-Hiatt said the township board held a special meeting last Wednesday night.
She said notice of the special meeting was posted at the township hall on Bell Road at least 18 hours prior to the meeting, which she said met the board's legal requirement of giving public notice of the meeting.
However, Durm-Hiatt said representatives of area media outlets were not notified about the special meeting. That notice to the media has been past practice by the board.
Vosburgh, contacted by telephone at his home this morning, said, "I would love to talk to you about this, but by my attorney's advice, I won't say anything about it."
Vosburgh was an unsuccessful candidate for the Niles Township fire chief's job earlier this year.
Township Fire Chief Craig Lear would not comment or answer questions about Vosburgh's firing.
