Did you know that research shows the more developmental assets a person has, the less likely they are to be involved with drugs and other risky behavior?
This year's parent fair will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 4:45 until 8 p.m.
This year there will be a keynote speaker who will provide information on the 40 developmental assets and how to continue to develop these in our children.
Family dining will be provided from 4:45 - 5:45. Child care and special activities for children ages 4-10 will begin at 6 and go until 8.
Parents can attend the keynote speaker at 6:15 and then choose three follow-up sessions from 7 to 8. Parent Fair is sponsored by Dowagiac Union Schools Counseling and Guidance Department and the Dowagiac Union Schools Title 1 staff.
Developing Capable Young People is training for adults who live or work with young people.
The adults learn how to develop the three perceptions and four skills that determine how effectively people deal with life.
While attending the sessions participants learn how to reverse the sharp increase in youth substance abuse, violence, vandalism, teen pregnancy and suicide and how to reverse the sharp decrease in motivation and achievement.
Each session focuses on one of the "Significant Seven" skills and perceptions, which if taught to others, help them to lead successful lives.
The "Significant Seven" perceptions include helping people to see themselves as capable, helping people to see themselves as significant and helping people to see themselves as having influence in their lives.
The skills include helping to develop self-discipline, helping to learn to work with others, helping to learn self-responsibility and judgment.
Three sessions will be offered during the 2003-2004 school year.
