NILES -- A pair of solid defensive stands helped Brandywine basketball coach Dave Roeder reach his 100th win as leader of the Bobcats Tuesday night.
Brandywine held Edwardsburg to three points in the second quarter and no points in the fourth for a decisive 39-21 Lakeland Conference victory that improved the Bobcats to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Roeder, in his 10th season at Brandywine, is 100-102.
Edwardsburg dropped to 2-4 on the year and 0-2 in the Lakeland Conference.
Edwardsburg took a 13-8 lead on Meghan Sweeney's steal and layup to start the second quarter. From there, however, Brandywine rattled off 14 unanswered points and did not allow Edwardsburg to score for the next six and a half minutes.
The two teams played fairly even in the third quarter, even though Brandywine did not score for the first 6:40 of the period. After a 5-0 Edwardsburg run, Emily Whitney put back an offensive rebound and Ashley LeMere sank a 3-pointer to keep Brandywine in front, 27-21.
The fourth quarter was the decisive period as Brandywine outscored the Eddies 12-0.
Edwardsburg committed 36 turnovers in the game while Brandywine turned the ball over 24 times. Both teams shot 29 percent from the field. Edwarsburg made 9-of-31 shots and Brandywine made 15-of-51.
Whitney led all scorers with 11 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
Stephanie Duckett added eight points for the Bobcats while Judy Schlutt scored seven and Shoemaker added six. Shoemaker went down late in the game with an injury to her right knee.
The Brandywine junior varsity basketball team beat Edwardsburg 55-23 to improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. Rachel Batman and Charlene Juhasz each scored 12 points to lead the Bobcats. Ashley Antus added 11 points and Nikki Martyniuk scored 10.
