Lakeshore outlasts Niles for 1-0 victory

NILES -- The Niles varsity soccer team showed more signs of improvement Tuesday night, dropping a 1-0 decision to Lakeshore in Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference West Division action.
The two teams were knotted at 0-0 following the first half and Niles held off the Lancers for 15 minutes of the second half before the lone goal was scored.
Holtgren pointed out his team's strong play at the start of both halves.
The Lancers outshot Niles 16-4 in the game. Niles goalkeeper Cory Coquillard managed nine saves.
Lakeshore goalkeeper Rob Scudder had two saves.
The Niles junior varsity team fared better against the Lancers, winning the contest 2-1.
The first goal of the game came on a through ball from Cody Riggenbach to Julian Freas who scored.
Lakeshore tied the match as a Niles player kicked the ball in the Vikings' goal.
The Vikings scored on a corner kick when Freas kept the ball in play and a Lakeshore player tried to head it out but put it in the goal.
Dan Ott had nine saves in goal as Lakeshore outshot the Vikings 14-11.
The Niles junior varsity is now 2-0 on the year.
The Niles varsity team travels to Benton Harbor Thursday night for another West Division contest.
Brandywine blanks Cass in Lakeland action
The Brandywine soccer team picked up a Lakeland Conference victory Tuesday night, beating Cassopolis 6-0 at home.
Garret Semrinec scored off an assist from Matt Wieger in the third minute. Andy Low then scored back-to-back goals, with assists from Wieger and D.J. Elrod, in the fourth and 18th minutes. Wieger scored off an assist from Kyle Low to end the first half with a 4-0 lead.
Semrinec scored his second goal in the 47th minute off an assist from Andy Low. Finally, Wieger scored his second goal off another assist from Andy Low in e 50th minute.
Brandywine outshot Cass 23-2.
