CASSOPOLIS -- Extra money from the Paradise Lake sewer project, which came in under budget, will help the Village of Cassopolis rehabilitate four pump stations.
The $50,000 is a "windfall," said Village Manager Art Sciorra.
Sciorra showed council members a schematic of the impellers Monday evening which need to be replaced due to wear.
Without the money, the village would have still been responsible for much of the repairs, expected to cost nearly $75,000.
The village will split the difference with the CAUA, the county utilities authority.
An appraisal will be made on approximately 1 1/2 acres of property being considered by the village for purchase.
The land is adjacent to the Department of Public Works property already owned by the village on State Street.
Should a new fire station be built in the future, the land would have more frontage and allow fire trucks to enter from the back and exit the front of a new firehouse.
The property is being offered by James and Sue Ameigh for $8,000.
In other business the village council:
The units will be for two- and three-bedroom town homes.
A public hearing about the proposed development was held by the Cassopolis Planning Commission on July 22.
Monday the village board had the first reading of an ordinance for tax exemption on the property.
Discussion will be continued at the next council meeting.
Council members took home the code books to look at the changes which were started in 1997 or '98.
