After the loss of both parents and getting divorced after 26 years of marriage, Becky Brock decided to make a life-changing decision.
On Saturday morning, Brock like many others who will participate in Steve's Run, will attempt to scratch another goal off her list.
Brock, who is a nursing student at Southwestern Michigan College, decided that she was going to change her life.
A hairdresser at the time, Brock decided that she would begin to take control of her future.
She under went gastric by-pass surgery and joined the SMC Distance Running Class this past spring.
The class was the first of its kind at the college and seemed to fit well with Brock's pre-nursing classes.
She really just wanted to get into sport-walking, but with the lectures and all the tests, it really inspired her to "get fit." She is even thinking about taking up running in the near future.
Besides the surgery and the class work, Brock joined Curves and works out there three times a week.
She dropped 130 pounds and is still going.
Brock says she hates to sound like a commercial, but she cannot help it.
With the loss of weight and the exercise programs she has participated in, it really has given her more energy and a more positive outlook on life in general.
Gunn, who coached SMC to numerous state and national track and cross country championships, is now the director of SMC's Fitness and Wellness Center.
On Saturday Brock will participate in the 5K walk portion of Steve's Run.
She said that one of the goals of the class was to participate in a race. She chose Steve's Run, which is now in its 29th year, for several reasons.
Brock said that she just wants to finish the 5K walk.
Not only is she going to compete, but she is also helping take registrations as she works in the SMC business office as well.
