CASSOPOLIS -- On Sunday, July 20, at Camp Friedenswald, North America's largest gathering of Mennonite musicians will meet and practice a variety of folk traditions at the fourth annual Mennofolk 2003.
With the Mennonite tradition of four part a capella singing, there is always a strong emphasis on vocal harmony.
Instrumentation styles range from Cajun to Latin to bluegrass to pop to Celtic. Around 50 songwriters and performers from across the country are expected to entertain on four stages during the festival.
Each stage will have a different emphasis: traditional folk music, peace and justice, original singer/songwriters, and a stage just for kids. Swimming, hiking, food and jam sessions will also be available, making for a relaxing day for the whole family in the peaceful, natural setting of the camp.
Admission is by donation to pay for musician expenses. No reservations are necessary.
Some of these performers have been singing their original message songs for many years.
Many favorites from Mennofolk 2002 are returning along with new performers.
Following the one day Festival, Camp Friedenswald hosts a five day family music camp.
Evening concerts are open to the public and begin at 6:30 p.m.
