The Niles 13-year-old travel baseball team dropped a non-league game to St. Joseph Wednesday night at Ellis field.
Sloppy defense got Niles in an early 6-0 hole and a big rally fell short in the 9-8 loss.
Niles battled back to within one run in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded with no outs. Clutch St. Joseph pitching, however, slammed the door on the Vikings.
D.J. Wolnick took the loss for Niles while Jarred Flock chipped in with two hits.
Niles is now 18-7 on the season.
