The Niles High School boys' soccer program is building for the future.
Despite the rain, wind and cold, current and future team members came together to improve the soccer practice field recently. Black dirt was donated and delivered to the high school.
Soccer players, along with varsity coach Jerry Holtgren and several fathers, worked for hours spreading black dirt to improve the practice field. More than 20 boys showed up to help with the field improvements.
With soccer gaining popularity, the high school program continues to improve. The 2002-03 varsity soccer team had the highest winning percentage of any boys' programs last year.
The Vikings ended the season with a 12-5 record. Ten members of the varsity team graduated and will be missed; however, five seniors will lead the 2003-04 team.
Throughout the year, both the boys' and girls' soccer teams raised money for several projects. Both teams donated money to install a sprinkler system along with other field improvements.
Open field for any interested male high school players is every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
