NILES -- The annual Niles Spring Clean Up in part of Niles near the Fifth Street Corridor, sponsored by the City of Niles Police Department, is Saturday.
According to the police department, several garbage dumpsters will be opened at 8 a.m on Saturday, May 31, at various locations in selected areas along the Fifth Street corridor, where people can dump their unwanted items.
Dumpster locations will be at Sixth and Vine; Seventh and Ferry; Seventh and Howard; Seventh and Ash; Ninth and Vine, and 10th and Cass streets.
The use of the dumpsters is free of charge, and the offer is intended to give people who live in those areas a chance to clean up their yards, garages and homes.
However, the use of the dumpsters, because of limited dumpster space, is available only to residents who live in the above specified areas.
Families who live there are asked to not invite friends and family who live outside that area to use the dumpsters because of the limited amount of space available.
He said city police officers and volunteers will monitor the dumpsters throughout the day.
Merriman, based on experiences from previous years, said those who want to make sure there is room for their trash in the dumpsters, should aim at getting rid of their trash early.
He said as soon as the dumpsters are filled up, they will be removed and taken to the Berrien County Landfill.
There are also restrictions on what will be allowed in the dumpsters, Merriman said.
The following items won't be allowed: paints or solvents, tires, free liquids, cement, brick or concrete, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners and brush, as well as leaves or grass.
Those restrictions, Merriman said, will be strictly enforced.
