This will be a busy weekend for Dowagiac sports teams as the post season heats up.
Three members of the Dowagiac varsity track team will compete at Caledonia High School on Saturday in the state track finals.
Before that happens, the Chieftain varsity soccer team will compete on Friday in Vicksburg in its first ever district championship match.
In between those two events, the Dowagiac varsity softball team will try to capture its first district title on Saturday in Coloma since 1993.
Double regional champion J.J. White will attempt to bring home state championships in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and long jump. White has the second best time or distance in those two events.
He will also compete in the 110-meter high hurdles where his time is 17th fastest.
Devon Jackson is making a return trip to the state finals. After qualifying last year as a sophomore, Jackson backed that up by qualifying in the 100- and 200-meters.
His times coming in from the regionals are 28th and 19th fastest respectively.
Ashley Urbanski had her heart broken twice at the regional meet a couple of weeks ago in Middleville.
Although she did qualify for the 200-meters on Saturday, she barely missed out, both by place and time, in the 100-meters and the long jump.
Just a sophomore, I expect Urbanski to earn valuable experience on Saturday and come back with a vengence next season.
Dowagiac can be proud of its soccer team. The Chieftains have had an exceptional season which can only get better Friday night.
After squeezing by Allegan on Monday, Dowagiac scored six second half goals against Three Rivers to reach the finals.
I do not know much about Vicksburg, but I do know if Dowagiac plays its brand of soccer it will be the district champion.
What can I say about the No. 2 ranked Dowagiac softball team that hasn't already been said?
The Chieftains will take on Niles on Saturday in the semifinals, a squad Dowagiac cannot afford to over look.
Dowagiac knows that a win over Niles would probably put them up against long-time rival Lakeshore in the finals.
Nothing would be sweeter for the team, coaching staff and Dowagiac fans than a win over Lakeshore to capture the district championship.
It's going to be a big weekend for Chieftain sports fans. Come out and support all the teams as they compete for post season glory.
A large crowd would do wonders for these young athletes.
