NILES -- Brandywine High School senior Nikki Smith and Niles High School senior Jason Todd are the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for May 12-17.
Smith and Todd both qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Track and Field Finals.
At the Division 3 Regional meet held at Constantine Friday, Smith qualified for the finals in two events. She won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.4 to qualify in that event. She also finished second in the high jump with a leap of 4-11 to qualify in that event. In addition, Smith finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.9, missing the qualifying time in that event by just seven-tenths of a second.
At the Division 2 Regional meet held Friday at Middleville-Thornapple Kellogg, Todd finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.49 to qualify for the finals. He beat the qualifying standard time by nearly two seconds.
The Division 3 finals will be held at Comstock Park High School on Saturday, May 31.
The Division 2 finals will be held at Caledonia High School on Saturday, May 31.
