SMC president named Memorial Day speaker

Dr. David M. Mathews, president of Southwestern Michigan College, will be the keynote speaker at the Dowagiac Memorial Day ceremonies to be held at City Hall on May 26 at 10:30 a.m.
Dr. Mathews received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from North Carolina State University in 1992 and has been involved as a collegiate level educator ever since.
He is highly regarded in the field of mathematics and has been very active as a consultant, speaker and author.
He became president of Southwestern Michigan College in July 2001.
Dr. Mathews served in the United States Army from 1982 to 1986, achieving the rank of captain.
He served as a Special Forces A-Team Detachment Commander for classified special forces operations.
Prior to this, he was anti-tank platoon leader in the deployment of wire-guided anti-tank missile systems in Korea.
While in Korea, he also served as an infantry platoon leader in the DMZ, commanding the security force of Freedom Bridge north of Seoul and also commanding Guard Post Collier within the DMZ.
Dr. Mathews was named Distinguished Military Graduate from Army Officer's Candidate School.
Dr. Mathews currently serves Dowagiac as president of the Police Athletic League and a member of the Rotary Club. He was Union High valedictorian in 1978.
