Dowagiac woman charged in Decatur embezzlement

DECATUR -- Former Decatur Public Schools head bookkeeper Debra Kay Smith, 43, of Dowagiac, has been charged in a felony warrant with embezzling more than $20,000 in school funds over a two-year period, according to village Police Chief Harry Layman.
Smith was arraigned before District Judge Robert Hentchel and waived her right to a preliminary hearing. She will appear in Van Buren County Circuit Court at a later date.
Smith was released on a $25,000 personal recognizance bond.
The investigation was conducted by the Decatur Police Department with the assistance of the Decatur Public Schools and Van Buren County Sheriff's Department detective bureau.
