Dowagiac sweeps TR

The Dowagiac varsity baseball team ran its season record to 15-3 with a non-conference sweep of host Three Rivers Monday afternoon.
The Chieftains, who will entertain Battle Creek Central today in a Big-16 Conference twinbill, won 7-3 and 10-1.
Dowagiac scored seven runs on six hits in the opening game, highlighted by Richie Burling's home run and Matt Stewart's RBI double. Stewart was 2-for-3 in the contest.
Matthew Carlson was also 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Andrew Cumming added an RBI single.
Davey Moran improved to 3-1 on the year as he went the distance, allowing nine hits, while striking out five.
In the second game Dowagiac finished with eight hits, led by Stewart's three-run home run, his first of the season.
Chris Singleton went 2-for-4, while Landon Reed was 2-for-3 with two singles and three RBIs. Rod Laylin added a double.
Brandon Zachary got his first career varsity start and pitched a beauty for the Chieftains.
Zachary (4-0) went the distance, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
Dowagiac and Battle Creek Central are scheduled to begin play at 4 p.m. at Rotary Park.
