Garwood, 61, dies

NILES -- Niles businessman Denis A. Garwood, has died.
Funeral services for Garwood, 61, of Batchelor Road in Niles, are Friday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Edwardsburg with Father David Otto of the church officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Niles.
Garwood died on Tuesday at 9:49 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Ind., following a short battle with cancer.
He was born on June 14, 1941, in Detroit, the oldest of 12 children.
On Aug. 29, 1964 in Bay City, he was married to Beverly A. Gasta, who survives.
Garwood moved to Niles in 1975, coming from Paw Paw.
He was the owner/operator of Garwood Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. in Niles.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and served as an usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 708 in Niles, the Brandywine Optimist Club, and the Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Berrien and Cass, Inc. He was an avid fisherman and and enjoyed fishing tournaments.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly; a daughter, Rebecca L. Wirick of Niles; a son, David S. Garwood of Fayetteville, N.C.; five grandchildren; seven sisters, Arleen Lloyd of Lapeer, Christine Serra of Walled Lake, Mary Garwood of Colorado, Kathy Hartka of Belaire, Md., Julie Garwood of San Diego, Calif., Gail Garwood of Iowa City, Iowa, and Grace Cialek of Minneapolis, Minn.; three brothers, Peter Garwood of Bellaire, Kenneth Garwood of Pontiac and Stanley Garwood of Clarkston. He was preceded in death by a brother, Giles Garwood.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. The Rosary will be at 6 p.m. with a sharing of memories following.
Memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Berrien and Cass, Inc., 1 S. Fifth Street, Niles, MI 49120. Funeral arrangements were handled by Halbritter Funeral Home.
