NILES -- Brandywine High School junior Nicki McGowen and Niles High School sophomore Cory Coquillard are the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for April 7-12.
McGowen is a pitcher on the Brandywine varsity softball team which won four games last week. McGowen earned all four wins and is now 6-1 on the year. She gave up a total of eight hits in five games last week. In a 1-0 win over Northridge on Thursday she allowed just one hit. In an 10-0 win over South Bend Clay on Thursday she gave up only two hits. McGowen gave up two hits in the Bobcats' 3-1 loss to Lafayette Jefferson Saturday. She then gave up only two hits in a 1-0 win over Penn. Finally, she surrendered just one hit in an 11-1 win over Merrillville on Saturday.
Coquillard is the starting third baseman on the Niles baseball team which won three games last week. In a 4-3 win over South Bend Adams he hit a double which brought in three runs to tie the game. On Saturday, the Vikings swept a doubleheader with Brandywine with wins of 9-0 and 8-3. Coquillard hit a double in the first game.
