Dowagiac rallies to win pair of contests

The Dowagiac varsity baseball team did it the hard way again Friday night.
The Chieftains rallied from a 9-0 deficit in the opening game against visiting Berrien Springs to post a 13-11 non-conference victory.
Dowagiac rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the second game for a 6-3 win.
That game was called after five innings due to darkness.
Dowagiac (7-3) scored three runs in the fourth, six in the fifth and four in the sixth to come from behind to pick up the win.
Brandon Zachary earned his second win of the season in relief of Jonathon Bartee. Davey Moran worked the final inning for the Chieftains to pick up the save.
Dowagiac finished with 13 hits in the contest, led by Chris Singleton and Matt Stewart who doubled twice and drove in four runs.
Bartee finished with two hits, while Eddie Campbell and Rod Laylin each had a hit and an RBI.
In the nightcap, Singleton went the distance, giving up three runs on four hits.
Dowgiac had eight more hits in the second game, led by Richie Burling who doubled and laid down a bunt single.
Matthew Carlson had a bunt single and a lead-off triple to start the winning rally in the fifth.
Singleton, Bartee and Jeff Cooper all had RBI singles for the Chieftains.
Dowagiac will play at Brandywine on Wednesday. The non-league doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
