Accused shoplifter bites Martin’s security guard

NILES -- A man allegedly shoplifting two meat packages from the meat cooler at Martin's Supermarket was arrested pending charges for retail fraud and assault and battery Sunday, Niles City Police reports indicate.
Kevin Russell Mears, 28, 816 N. Main St., Mishawaka, Ind., was allegedly first seen stealing by a supermarket employee when he removed the meat from the cooler, said police reports.
The police report said Mears then walked past the cash register without paying.
Two Martin's Supermarket security personnel identified themselves to Mears as he was trying to leave the supermarket, the police report said.
Mears then allegedly pulled away and started fighting.
Mears allegedly struck one of the security guards in his left eye with a closed fist causing his glasses to get knocked off, the police report said.
The police report said the security guards then took Mears to the ground.
While on the floor, Mears allegedly bit one of the security guards twice in the right arm, the police report said.
According to the report, officers took Mears into custody when they arrived.
Mears was transported to the Niles Police Department where he was booked and lodged,
Total bond was set at $700.
In other police reports:
Michael Rudy Polega, 38, 404 E. Main St., Room 217, Niles, was pulled over on the 400 block of North Seventh Street for failing to use a turn signal, the police report said.
The police report said Polega was then arrested for a second driving with a license suspended offense, as well as a second operating a vehicle under the influence offense.
Polega was booked and lodged at Niles Police Department.
Bond was set at $500.
