Albion finishes third in Indy

The Albion College men's track and field team earned a third place finish at the Jerry England Track and Field Invitational hosted by the University of Indianapolis Saturday.
Albion finished with 94 points, while meet winner Saginaw Valley finished with 132 1/2 points. The host Greyhounds finished runners-up with 124 1/2 points.
Albion had two individuals finish first in their events. Senior Chris Stefanes (Bloomfield Hills/Birmingham Seaholm) won the javelin with a throw of 172 feet, 1 inch, while junior Taurean Wilson (Albion/Albion) took top honors in the 800 meter run with a time of 1 minute, 56.22 seconds.
Senior Eric D'Andrea (Highland/Milford) also placed in the 800, finishing third overall in 1:58.09.
Junior Nicholas Morgan (Flint/Northern) finished second in the 110 meter hurdles. Morgan's time of 15.03 seconds was his fastest time of the season.
Albion placed two athletes in the top five in the long jump and triple jump. First-year athlete Michael Bailey (Lansing/Waverly) was the runner-up in the long jump. Bailey leaped 22 feet, 9 1/4 inches, while teammate Matt Haney (Gal-ien/Brandywine) leaped 22 feet, 5 1/4 inches to finish fourth overall. In the triple jump, first-year student-athlete Charles Lott (Flint/Southwestern Community) finished third with a leap of 41 feet, 3 3/4 inches. Senior Alex Case (Union City/Union City) was fifth at 40 feet, 7 1/2 inches.
In the shotput, Kyle Robinson (Mulliken/Grand Ledge) placed second with a throw of 46 feet, 10 1/4 inches.
Sophomore Brian Elliott (Royal Oak/Birmingham Brother Rice) finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.72. Brad Stish (Royalton, Minn./Royalton) placed ninth, crossing the finish line in 59.71.
Albion also placed two athletes in the Top 10 in the 5,000 meter run. Juniors Nick Mockeridge (Belleville/Belleville) and Todd Falker (East Tawas/Tawas Area) finished fourth and 10th with times of 15:01.95 and 15:35.18. Mockeridge's time was less than one second off the school record of 15:01.0 set by Doug Goudie in 1989.
Albion also placed three athletes in the discus, as Ivan Meiring (Quincy/Quincy), Jeremiah Morse (Belding/Belding), and Stefanes finished fifth, sixth, and eighth. They had throws of 147 feet, 1 inch, 143 feet, 2 inches, and 140 feet, 8 inches.
First-year student-athlete Jerry Krueger (Otsego/Otsego) finished sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.48.
Albion starts league action Wednesday with a double dual meet against Adrian College and Alma College. The meet starts at 2 p.m.
