Dowagiac scored 32 runs on 24 hits in its sweep of Sturgis in Wolverine Conference non-divisional softball Tuesday.

The Chieftains (10-3) took the first game 18-3 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 14-4 victory also in five innings.

“We hit the ball really hard tonight and didn’t have any cheap hits,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “About the only thing we didn’t do is get the ball up in the wind to hit it out. We kept hitting line shots that hit the fence.”

In the first game, Alyssa Allen was 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Taylor Hulett added a double and two RBIs, while McKenzie Herter was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Marissa Dodd, Riley Daly, Vivi Lucio and Megan Huey all drove in two runs.

Megan Soderbloom (3-0) picked up the victory as she tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Mickie Kiggins was 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs.

Herter and Hulett both had two hits with a double and combined for six RBIs. Dodd, Riley and Allen all finished with two hits and an RBI.

Hulett scattered six hits to improve to 5-1 on the season. She struck out 10.

“Mickie Kiggins had breakout game two with three doubles and four RBIs,” Behnke said. “We need a get a little better pitching and much better at defense the next two days if we want to beat Coloma on Friday.”

Dowagiac host the defending Wolverine West Division champions on Friday. The first game starts at 4 p.m.
