Niles water towers to be repainted

Two Niles water towers will be getting a fresh coat of paint.

On Monday, the Niles City Council approved the low bid of Seven Brothers Painting, of Shelby Township, Mich., for the painting and coating of the Fifth Street and Century water towers at a cost of $227,900.

A recent inspection and evaluation of the city’s water towers by Dixon Engineering found both tanks to be at a critical stage to be re-coated without additional labor and materials, which could have tripled the cost as soon as next year.

Work on one tower can begin in the spring with the other tower to be completed in the fall.

The new paint job is expected to last 15 years.

Six bids were received.

The work will be paid using $125,000 from general water reserves, $60,000 in reserve funds and $42,500 in bond reserve funds.
