Sister Lakes Principal Mike Campbell tries to see what’s coming next.

Mike Campbell’s first year as Sister Lakes Elementary School principal ended Thursday as he fended off a foamy fusillade for a good cause.

Campbell and four teachers, Rachel Kyncl, Shannon Hatch, Kim Montgomery and Alicia Stout, donned goggles, plastic ponchos and grim grins as students pummeled them with whipped cream pies in a sweet end to school for the summer.

Bev Dodd, the Starfish Story-winning paraprofessional who got involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life 16 years ago after her father died of prostrate cancer, said the fun fundraiser generated $382 for Sister Lakes’ Relay team ahead of the Aug. 10-11 event at Union High School’s Athletic and Physical Education CompleX (APEX).

Dodd also oversees concessions at the relay and sponsored two potato bakes at school.

With 200 students, she thought 400 paper plates and four cases of Reddi Wip donated by Myers Super Valu would be enough for 50-cent tosses.

“That’s a lot of whipped cream,” she said of the 48 cans. Volunteers scurried around gathering up plates so they could be reloaded and hurled again.

Campbell’s parents, Cathy and Ray, cleared their calendar and drove over from Albion to enjoy the show along with Supt. Dr. Mark Daniel and Deputy Supt. Dawn Conner.

In fact, Campbell’s mom stepped up to the line to pelt him with pies.

Campbell, who came here from Comstock, said his previous memorable stunt was being duct-taped to a wall before the chair was pulled away.

“They’ve tried to get me to shave my head, but I’m not doing that,” he said. “Bev Dodd does a wonderful job raising money, and the kids are excited to throw at their teachers. We had a good year. It’s a great school.”
