“You Can Still Rock in America,” a free six-hour concert remembering the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, features a band an hour from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Niles’ Riverfront Amphitheater. All ages are welcome.

Summer concerts were scheduled to end with Hey Annie, a 5-year-old band which combines classic rock by such artists as Pink Floyd, Traffic and ZZ Top with original songs by Kevin Alstott.

“We’re happy to be part of something bigger for the community,” said Mark, Kevin’s brother.

“My position here is to serve the community with music,” said organizer Tom Majarek, explaining he lets participating artists determine the direction of their performances.

So when musician Cort Hullinger, whom Majerek knows from several bands, expressed a desire to do a “rock thing,” he was all ears.

Riverfront concerts usually hew to familiar classic rock over heavier sounds to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

“A lot of good rock bands have come out of Niles,” Majerek said. “This is a way for people to get together and see that we’re fine. I can see it happening every year.”

It seems like it already is after David Mayfield’s 2011 appearance.

Hullinger, 49, guitarist for Simple Crush, which features a female vocalist, has been playing in bands since high school, including Terra Firma, of Buchanan.

He said Exit 41 refers to the Int. 94 exit to Watervliet, hometown of a trio whose influences include Elton John, Eric Clapton, the Eagles, Billy Joel and Coldplay.

Hullinger, a soccer dad, said Simple Crush has been together for four years, performing from St. Joseph to Fort Wayne, Ind. The band covers Guns ’N Roses and AC/DC.

“I just put the word out,” said Hullinger, explaining the event has potential to become an annual back-to-school happening.
